walking a line
The simple origins of this work began with walking a line in the Great Sand Dunes of Southern Colorado.
It had rained in the early morning hours, and the sun had dried the surface of the sand making a light crust over damp dark sand beneath. The design carved into the glass represents what was “walked out” over several hundred feet of dune. The location was a dune undercut by the river that flows from the Sangre de Christo Mountains rising over 14,000 feet adjacent to this dune field. The geography of this area are marvelous and majestic, and I have taken students there many times to learn and cultivate the practice of land art. The composition of this sculpture embodies the drawing walked out that day with the manipulation of materials back in the studio pay homage to the experience in its many manifestations.
